前幾天有去跨年嗎?是看了101煙火,還是跟三五好友在家開跨年派對呢?這次Riana要跟大家分享她的跨年活動,看看跟我們有什麼不一樣!

Counting down to the New Year is one of the most exciting things to happen at the end of the year. During this event I am usually with my friends, hanging by the bridge in my hometown, waiting for the fireworks display to start.

You’d think that we should be with our family during this event wouldn’t you?

Ah, but you forget – we just celebrated Christmas with our entire family, and now it’s the time for us to catch up with our friends to simply relax. I always plan with my friends to watch the fireworks and to count down together to the New Year.

Usually I meet up and have dinner with my friends and my brother. Because I’m a twin and my brother is the same age as me, we often have the same friends. So we eat dinner together on New Year’s Eve, perhaps enjoy a few drinks and chat a little bit before going over to the bridge or somewhere we can see the fireworks. As a hint: never try to buy Fish ‘n’ Chips on this day… everyone else thinks it’s a good idea too, and you’ll end up waiting for an hour or more!

In my hometown, Mandurah, the town officials hire people to set off the fireworks display from a boat. So if you want to watch the fireworks, it’s best to be somewhere near the water. It’s usually very crowded, and can be difficult to find a good spot to watch the fireworks comfortably.

However, once you’re there, it starts to get interesting. I always see my classmates, teachers, doctor, and other people from my community all getting ready to watch the fireworks together. The fireworks go off at 9PM first, so the little kids can enjoy the show too, as well as a later fireworks display at 12. There are usually food stands, games and many interesting things around to keep you interested while you wait. I like to buy ‘glow in the dark’ toys or necklaces; it’s so much fun to run around when you’re glowing different colors in the dark.

When the time is getting close, people start to huddle at the water’s edge. It’s such a thrill to be in the crowd, surrounded by friends and people you don’t know, and all together to be shouting out “9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Happy New Year!”

Everyone feels so happy watching to fireworks shoot up into the sky, exploding into a million different colors before raining down onto the moon reflected on the water. People hug or hold hands as they watch; it can be quite emotional for people.

And so this is how the New Year starts in my hometown, with a display of beauty and brilliance that causes people to feel such joy and emotion!
