Dragon Boat Festivities

One night I was sitting in a café on Roosevelt road with a fellow Canadian sipping a coffee. We’re talking about this and that and how we love Taipei; she mentioned how she loved Dragon Boat. This interested me because I was looking to meet new people, so I inquired. She told me about the team, Cantai, and how it is made up of Canadians living in Taipei. This sounded great to me, so next week there I was under a bridge at 6:00am paddling in a ‘bucket’. We had a few weeks to practice our technique before we could get in the boats and go for a real paddle.

On every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of the next several weeks I had to wake up at 4:40am to be at Danshui River by 6:00am for practice. Our practices were intense and very tiring; we paddled in all types of weather including the hot sun and heavy rain. Improving almost daily our team became like one big family. As the Dragon Boat Festival approached we became increasingly excited.

Finally the weekend had arrived. Our first competition! We were all so excited in our red and white uniforms. We jogged a team, stretched as a team and raced as a team. It was an amazing feeling to be working together as one. The excitement built to a climax as we paddled out to the starting area. As we waited to begin we all fell silent, waiting, waiting for instruction.

  • Andrews wedding lunch

Scott

On Sunday I went to my first Taiwanese wedding lunch, the groom is my friend and coworker Andrew. It was a very exciting and fun experience. I was very worried at first because when I was given the red invitation it had no English on it, I panicked not knowing what to do. My worries were soon alleviated, however, because Andrew hired a bus to take us to the restaurant. All we had to do was meet at our work early in the morning and we would travel to his hometown of Yilan. Now onto my next problem, the present…

  • Chiayi-Hualien

So, two of my coworkers and myself went to Chiayi a little while ago. David, Riana and I went to visit one of Riana’s AESIEC friends named Bonnie! We took the train out of Taipei and her father picked us up at the train station. Then we went back to his parent in laws house.

  • My trip to Alishan

Few weeks ago some friends and I decided to head to Alishan!  My traveling companions were Riana from work, and six of her AEISEC friends. We left from Taipei Main station by train at eleven o’clock Friday night.  It sure was a long ride.  Once we got off that train, we had to wait a couple hours for a transfer to a bus, then another train.  We finally arrived in Alishan about mid afternoon on Saturday, and the weather was bleak!  However, our spirits were high and we were happy to be there.
After dropping all of our gear at the hotel (and having a short nap) we set out for a hike.  The rain was coming down hard, so we got a ride to the top of the walking paths and strolled down.  It was a serene walk because most people did not want to spend the day in the rain. Being in the woods reminded me of home, in a good way.  Though the trees and plants may be different I still enjoyed their presence.  Some trees in that forest are so large and old it is hard to truly comprehend their age!  One was over two thousand and three hundred years old!  I wonder how many more years it will survive for?  I hope many generations.  It made my twenty one years seem irrelevant by comparison and it was very humbling.  I felt very at home surrounded by so much life, there is also many beautiful man made things to look at in the park.  This includes both Taiwanese and Japanese structures and temples.   When we had finished our walk we were all starving so we decided to get some dinner.  What was on the menu you might ask?  Traditional Alishan dishes of course!  A wide variety of dishes were quickly laid out on a table in front of us and the feast commenced. After we had all had our fill, taken pictures and played a few games around the table, we returned to our large hotel room.   In our room we played cards and other games for many hours until one by one we all drifted apart and to sleep.

  • Valentine's Day

In Canada, Valentine's Day is very important for couples! Almost every Canadian couple celebrates Valentine's Day by giving something to their sweetheart, going out for dinner, or just spending an evening relaxing together. Traditionally on Valentine's Day the man will give the woman flowers or a box of chocolates, but now many couples exchange gifts!
On the other hand, many people who are single do not like Valentine's Day, they think it is a waste of time and money. I prefer to think of it as an excuse to spend quality time with the people you love! So I spend time with my girlfriend on Valentine's Day. We might go out for dinner to our favorite place, or maybe get some ice cream and walk in the park; it does not matter as long as we are together!
If my girlfriend and I do decide to go out for dinner, we like to order from restaurants, but do not like to stay there and eat. We usually take the food and go to one of our houses, the beach or on top of a mountain. It is very romantic to have dinner somewhere that has a nice view! In Victoria there is a mountain called Mount Tolmie where you can drive to and look over Victoria. It is very beautiful during the night with all the street lights lit up and the stars above you. Some of the places we like to go and eat at are Baan Thai (Thailand food), Café Mexico (Mexican food) and Pagliacci’s (Italian food). There are many, many other good places to eat in Victoria, it is very multicultural and it is easy to find food from almost every ethnicity.
There is no lack of flowers to give to your loved ones in Victoria. Named the ‘city of gardens’ it even has flowers hung from street lights downtown! There is also a place called the Butchart Gardens that is beautiful to walk through. During the spring and summer it is full of flowers, and during the winter it has a cover of snow with Christmas lights everywhere! Another nice place to walk is along the ‘inner harbour’ of Victoria, especially during the evening/night when the lights are reflecting off the water.
These are only a small portion of all the great things to do with your loved ones in Victoria. If you ever get a chance to come to Victoria, you will see what I mean! It is a very romantic city, and the perfect place to spend Valentines Day.
