Today's lesson, Here, here, There, there

Sometimes people have trouble with the words "here" and "there". These two words can have different meaning when placed at the beginning or the end of a sentence. Here's my explanation.

• At the end of a sentence

當here和there用在句尾時，here指的是『這個地方』，there指的是『那個地方』(通常指目前看不見的地方)。如果你使用這2個單字是為了表達上述意思，便不能把它放在句首。

When "here" and "there" are used at the end of a sentence, they mean "this place" or "that place". If you are talking about "this place" or "that place" you can not put these words at the beginning of a sentence.

I like living in Taiwan. I like it here. 

Here is a nice place to live. (X)

I have never been to Antarctica. I have never been there.

There is too cold. (X)

• At the beginning of a sentence

當here用在句首時，表示你正給某人某樣東西，或者是指你發現了某件東西。(通常指現在可看見的東西)

When "here" is used at the beginning of a sentence, it means that you are giving someone something. Whatever you are giving should be visible or apparent at the time. It can also mean that you found something.

Here is the report you wanted. (I give my report to May, the boss)

Here is some advice on how I want you to write the report. (May gives me good advice)

Here is the card I was looking for.

當there用在句首時，表示你正向某人指著某樣東西，(通常指現在可看見的東西)或者是某些事實。

When "there" is used at the beginning of a sentence, it means that you are pointing something out to someone. Whatever you are pointing out should be visible or apparent.

There is my sister, up on the stage. (I point to my sister)

Hey, look. There is a squirrel in that tree. (I point to the squirrel)

There is another way to use "there" at the beginning of a sentence. I just used it in this sentence.

"There" can also be used at the beginning of a sentence to show that something exists. 

There is a really good movie playing right now.

There are 50 states in the United States.

So if your friends make a mistake with "here" and "there" just give them a card with our website address and say "Here, this website can help you bring out the grammar. Everything is made here, in Taiwan. There is this guy named Ian and he writes the blog. Look, there is the the address written on the back of the card."

If you give them the wrong card, then you can say "Oh, sorry, I gave you the wrong card. Let me find the right card. I'm sure I put it here in my bag. Oh, here it is, I found it. Here, take this card and go to this website. I really like going there. There is some really great advice on using here and there anytime and anywhere.
