Compound Sentences
今天Ian要教大家如何造句,一步步帶領大家由最基本的簡單句,到需要以連接詞連接的複合句。
Before we start to learn about compound sentences, everyone should be clear about simple sentences first.
1. Simple sentence
A simple sentence has a subject, verb and usually a predicate.
Subject | Verb | Predicate |
All subjects are underlined and verbs are in bold print.
My name | is | Ian. |
I | am | 24 years old. |
2. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence is used to join two sentences. You can join two sentences by using a coordinating conjunction.
Coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, so, or, yet, nor.
My name is Ian | , | and | I am 24 years old.
Writing simple sentences is easy | , | but | complex sentences are hard.
I want to write in Chinese | , | so | I write a diary every day.
John never has to take tests | , | yet | he studies hard. |
Try practicing combining simple sentences into compound sentences.
1. She is very tall. She is not heavy because she is skinny. (But)
2. This computer is cheap. This computer is the most popular selling brand. (For)
3. I had to buy some milk. I went to the store. (So)
4. He never studies. He still gets good grades. (Yet)
5. Do you want to eat noodles? Do you want to go to pizza hut? (Or)
Now try finishing the sentences provided.
1. She wanted to go home, but ____________________.
2. ___________________, so he took some medicine.
3. He didn’t want to go to school, nor___________________.
4. _________________________, yet she still looks so young.
Writing a variety of sentences is important so I will try to introduce more sentence patterns in the future.
Hope this helps.
