I have lived in Taipei for 6 months now, and one thing I’ve noticed is that the weather is really hot, but hotels, department stores, and movie theaters are really cold.

The more expensive and high class a department store or hotel gets, the colder they set the temperature. In the summer, it is really refreshing when you walk past a department store and the doors open, allowing the cold air to blow out from inside the store. It’s like air conditioning for the sidewalk. Maybe department stores set their temperatures low to make customers cold so they’ll buy clothes, but when I get cold, I just leave.

Movie theaters are cold here too, but when you go to the theater, you can’t leave until the movie is over. When I went to see a movie for the first time in Taipei , my Japanese co-worker decided to buy a sweater before the movie started. He was raised in Taipei and went to the Taipei American School , so he knew about the cold movie theaters. I said I didn’t need a sweater or jacket because I’m Canadian and can handle the cold. By the end of the movie, I was freezing.

I always wonder if 7-11 is considered a high class variety (convenience) store, because I find it is really cold too. When American people visit a Taiwanese gas station they are surprised by two things.

1) There are no gas pumps at Taiwanese 7-11s (all American stores are gas stations).

2) They're FREEZING.

From now on, I know that if I’m going to a movie or a department store in Taipei , I have to bring a sweater or a jacket. I get cold in these two places even though I was raised in Canadian winters.
